Enchanting Density Minecraft: Mace 1.21 Guide (Levels I to V)

The Density enchantment is one of the major additions in the Minecraft 1.21 update (Tricky Trials). Exclusively reserved for the Mace, it increases the damage dealt during a free-fall attack, turning this already formidable weapon into a machine of explosive damage. This guide covers everything you need to know about the density enchantment in Minecraft in 2026: how it works, how to obtain it, damage calculation by level, optimal combinations, and comparison with Sharpness.

What is the Density enchantment? (Mace 1.21 exclusive)

Density is an offensive enchantment introduced in Minecraft version 1.21. It can only be applied to the Mace, the new weapon added in this same update. Unlike classic enchantments like Sharpness that add fixed damage, Density specifically increases the bonus fall damage of the Mace.

The Mace has a unique mechanic in Minecraft: the higher the player falls before striking an entity, the more damage is inflicted. Without any enchantment, each block of fall adds additional damage according to a progressive formula. Density amplifies this fall multiplier, making each block of height even more devastating.

The Mace itself is crafted with 1 Breeze Rod (obtained by killing a Breeze in the Trial Chambers) and 1 block of Heavy Core (a rare loot from the Ominous Vaults in these same chambers). It is therefore an end-game weapon that requires exploring the Trial Chambers to be crafted.

Density is incompatible with the following enchantments on the Mace: Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods. You must choose between a constant damage bonus (Sharpness) or an amplified fall damage bonus (Density). However, Density is perfectly compatible with Breach and Wind Burst, the other two exclusive enchantments of the Mace.

How to obtain Density (enchantment table, required level)

Density can be obtained by several methods. The most direct is the enchantment table. Place the Mace in the interface and surround the table with 15 bookshelves to access level 30 enchantments. Density regularly appears in the proposals for the Mace, often combined with other enchantments like Unbreaking.

The other methods of obtaining are as follows. Enchanted books found in the chests of Trial Chambers, dungeons, temples, and Nether bastions may contain Density. Librarian villagers offer random enchanted books in exchange for emeralds; break and replace the lectern to reset the offer until you get Density at the desired level. Fishing can also yield enchanted books with Density, although the chances are low. Finally, the Ominous Vaults in the Trial Chambers have a high probability of containing high-level enchanted books, including Density IV and V.

To maximize your chances at the enchantment table, enchant in slot 3 (level 30) with 15 active bookshelves. If Density does not appear, enchant a low-cost item in slot 1 to reset the proposals.

Density Levels I to V: damage calculated by level

Density exists in 5 levels. Each level increases the additional damage per block of fall. The Mace deals a base damage of 6 (3 hearts) on the ground, to which bonus damage proportional to the fall height is added.

Without enchantment, the formula for the Mace's bonus fall damage is progressive: the first fall blocks add more damage per block than the subsequent blocks. Density adds 0.5 additional damage per block of fall and per level of the enchantment.

Here is a table of estimated total damage for different fall heights:

Fall Height Without Density Density I Density II Density III Density IV Density V
1 block 10 10.5 11 11.5 12 12.5
3 blocks 16 17.5 19 20.5 22 23.5
5 blocks 20 22.5 25 27.5 30 32.5
10 blocks 28 33 38 43 48 53
20 blocks 38 48 58 68 78 88
50 blocks 52 77 102 127 152 177
100 blocks 62 112 162 212 262 312

The above values are estimates based on known mechanics in 2026. Exact damage may vary depending on updates and snapshots.

From 50 blocks of fall with Density V, the Mace deals more than enough damage to eliminate any mob in the game in a single hit, including the Warden (500 HP) at very high altitude. It is the most devastating attack in the game in terms of raw damage.

Combining Density with Wind Burst and Breach on the Mace

The Mace has three exclusive enchantments that work together: Density, Wind Burst, and Breach. The combination of these three enchantments creates the most powerful offensive build of the 1.21 update.

Wind Burst (I to III) propels the player upwards after a successful hit with the Mace. The higher the level, the higher the player is launched. The interest with Density is obvious: Wind Burst sends you back into the air after each strike, allowing you to chain a new fall and thus benefit again from the Density bonus. It's an almost infinite free-fall combat loop as long as you hit your target with each descent.

Breach (I to IV) reduces the target's armor effectiveness. At each level, Breach ignores 15% of the enemy's armor, up to 60% armor ignored at level IV. Combined with the massive damage of Density, Breach ensures that this damage actually penetrates the opponent's defenses, which is particularly useful in PvP against players in Netherite Protection IV armor.

The optimal combination for the Mace is: Density V + Breach IV + Wind Burst III + Unbreaking III + Mending. To assemble this set, you need to use the anvil and combine the enchanted books in the correct order to minimize the prior work penalty.

The recommended fusion order is as follows: first combine Density V + Breach IV on one book, then Wind Burst III + Unbreaking III on a second book, then merge the two books together, and finally apply the combined book to the Mace. Add Mending last on the anvil. This makes 4 operations on the Mace, well below the "Too Expensive!" threshold of 6 operations.

Density vs Sharpness: which enchantment deals more damage?

The question often arises: should you put Density or Sharpness on the Mace? The answer entirely depends on the combat style.

Sharpness V adds 3 fixed damage (1.5 hearts) to each hit, regardless of the situation. It's a constant and reliable bonus, whether you're striking on the ground or in the air. For classic melee combat without falling, Sharpness is superior since Density adds nothing without fall height.

Density V adds no damage on the ground but surpasses Sharpness as soon as the player falls at least 3 blocks before striking. At 5 blocks of fall, Density V already adds 12.5 additional damage compared to 3 for Sharpness V. The gap then widens exponentially with height.

In practice, Density is the optimal choice in the vast majority of situations because the Mace is designed for aerial combat. With Wind Burst, the player is constantly sent back into the air after each hit, ensuring fall damage with every strike. Using Sharpness on the Mace is like ignoring the weapon's central mechanic.

The only situation where Sharpness is preferable is a confined fight in a low-ceiling space (2 blocks) where falling is impossible. In this case, a sword with Sharpness V remains more effective than a Mace, regardless of the enchantment.

The Trial Chambers and the Mace: 1.21 context

The Mace and the Density enchantment are intrinsically linked to the Trial Chambers, the major underground structure of the 1.21 Tricky Trials update. These structures generate underground, usually between Y = -40 and Y = -20, and are composed of rooms filled with Trial Spawners and traps.

The Breeze is the exclusive mob of the Trial Chambers. It is a hostile creature that attacks with Wind Charges, projecting players and entities. Killing it drops 1 to 2 Breeze Rods, one of the two components needed to craft the Mace. The Heavy Core, the second component, is found exclusively in the Ominous Vaults, special chests that require an Ominous Trial Key to be opened.

The Trial Chambers are also the best source of high-level enchanted books with Density. The Ominous Vaults have a dedicated loot table that includes enchantments exclusive to versions 1.21+, with high levels (IV and V). Exploring multiple Trial Chambers is therefore doubly interesting: you obtain the materials to craft the Mace and the enchanted books to enhance it.

To explore these structures in multiplayer on your own server, a Minecraft hosting with enough RAM is recommended. The Trial Spawners generate waves of mobs that strain the server, especially if multiple players are exploring different chambers simultaneously.

Density Enchantment FAQ

Does Density work without falling?

No. On the ground, Density adds absolutely no additional damage. The enchantment only activates when the player is in free fall at the moment of impact. Even a fall of a single block is enough to trigger the bonus.

Can Density and Sharpness be applied to the same Mace?

No. Density, Sharpness, Smite, and Bane of Arthropods are mutually exclusive. Only one of these four enchantments can be applied to the Mace.

Does Density work in PvP?

Yes. The bonus fall damage also applies against other players. Combined with Breach IV to ignore armor, a Density V Mace hit from 20 blocks high can eliminate a player in full Netherite armor in a single impact.

What is the maximum level of Density?

The maximum level is Density V. It can be obtained at the enchantment table at level 30, through enchanted books, or via the Ominous Vaults in the Trial Chambers.

Does Wind Burst cancel the player's fall damage?

Striking an entity with the Mace completely cancels fall damage for the player, with or without Wind Burst. It is an intrinsic property of the Mace: as long as you hit a mob or player, you take no fall damage, regardless of the height.

Is the Mace better than a Netherite sword?

In aerial combat with Density V and Wind Burst, the Mace deals incomparable damage. In classic ground combat, a Netherite sword with Sharpness V remains superior due to its faster attack speed (1.6 hits/second compared to 0.6 for the Mace). Both weapons are complementary in a well-equipped inventory.

Does Density work on Bedrock Edition?

Yes. The Mace, Density, and the Trial Chambers are available on both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition since version 1.21.
