Which VPS plan should I choose for Hermes Agent?

Hermes runs with 2 GB of RAM when the model is hosted by an external provider. The Linux VPS 04G with 4 GB leaves room for browser automation and several chat platforms. Go for the 08G or 12G if other services share the same server.

Is the AI model included with the VPS?

No. The VPS hosts the agent, and the model comes from a provider such as OpenRouter, Nous Portal, OpenAI or Anthropic, billed separately. A local model is possible, but it needs at least 8 GB of RAM for a small model and far more for a large one.

Do I need to open ports on the server?

No. The gateway connects out to Telegram or Discord and to your model provider. You can block all inbound traffic except SSH.

How do I secure my agent?

Install it under a non-root user, keep the API keys in a file only that user can read and restrict bot access to your own account IDs. Approval mode asks for your go-ahead before any sensitive command.

Which Linux distribution should I use?

Ubuntu and Debian are the easiest choices, and both are offered when you set up your OuiHeberg VPS. The installer also works on most other recent distributions.

Can I move my agent to another server?

Yes. Configuration, keys, memory and skills live in the ~/.hermes folder. Copy that folder to the new server and start the gateway again.

Install Hermes Agent in four steps

Pick the right VPS

You need at least 2 GB of RAM. We recommend the Linux VPS 04G with 4 GB, which gives more room for browser automation or several chat platforms.

Run the official installer

Log in over SSH with a dedicated user, then run the Nous Research script. It installs Python 3.11 and every dependency for you.

Connect a model

Add the API key of your provider, such as OpenRouter, Nous Portal, OpenAI or Anthropic. Model usage is billed by that provider.

Keep the agent running

The hermes gateway install command creates a service that restarts with the server. No inbound port is needed, so the firewall can block everything except SSH.
