Why choose the .fr

Four reasons backed by figures, each with its source. Not impressions.

Multiply your chances of being seen on the web

Local extensions, those matching the country you target, hold 56% of the top three Google results. And you are 40 times more likely to find the domain name of your dreams, where the .com is often saturated.

Choose a reliable and secure online presence

When you register as an individual, your name, address and phone number never appear in the public Whois database. That is how the .fr behaves by default: nothing to request, nothing to switch on. Your details stay hosted in France.

Earn trust and turn your visitors into customers

French people say they trust a .fr three times more than a .com, and 90% trust .fr web addresses. 84% find them more credible than sites carrying other extensions. When people trust you, they leave their details and they order.

Frequently asked questions about the .fr

Who can register a .fr domain name?

Any adult living in the European Union, and any company or organization with its registered office there. Afnic's naming policy also covers Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.

Will my personal data be public?

No. Data belonging to individuals is anonymized by default in the Whois database and hosted in France. Nothing to request, nothing to switch on.

Is the .fr more expensive than the .com?

No, it is the other way round. The .fr is one of the cheapest extensions on the market, sold on average 30% below the .com.

How long before my .fr works?

Registration itself is immediate, the name is yours as soon as the order is confirmed. Then allow a few hours for DNS servers around the world to catch up and for your site to answer everywhere.

Can I transfer a .fr registered elsewhere?

Yes. Ask your current registrar for the authorization code, then start the transfer from our client area. As long as you leave your DNS servers alone, your site and your email keep working throughout.

Who manages the .fr?

Afnic, the Association française pour le nommage Internet en coopération. It is a non-profit body created in 1997 that makes sure your domain name stays reliable, secure and reachable.

How do I choose my domain name?

In three steps. Pick a name that fits you, check that it is available, then go through a registrar such as OuiHeberg. A short name that is easy to spell will serve you for years.

Is there free help to get started?

Yes. Afnic runs four free programs: Réussir en .fr to structure your online presence, Je passe au numérique to get started step by step, Réussir avec le web for a self-assessment in under fifteen minutes, and the Foliweb workshops, with more than 400 workshops and webinars a year.
