Minecraft Saddle: How to Get & Use It on Pig, Strider, Mule

The saddle is one of the most sought-after items at the start of a Minecraft game, and one of the most frustrating to obtain: unlike almost all tools and equipment in the game, it cannot be crafted. It can only be obtained through loot, fishing, or trading. This complete guide explains all the methods to find one quickly, then how to use it on each available mount in the game.

Can you craft a saddle in Minecraft?

This question comes up regularly among new players, and the answer is clear: no, the saddle has no crafting recipe in vanilla Minecraft. It does not appear in the crafting table, furnace, or smithing table. This is a design decision by Mojang to encourage players to explore the world to find one.

No, the saddle cannot be crafted

Many players spend a considerable amount of time searching for the recipe online or trying combinations in the crafting table. There is none. If you use mods like Just Enough Items (JEI), a crafting recipe may appear depending on the mods installed, but in pure vanilla gameplay, the saddle is only a loot item.

All methods to obtain one

There are four ways to get a saddle in vanilla:

Loot in structure chests: this is the most common and fastest method while exploring.

Fishing: with the right enchantments, fishing can yield saddles.

Trading with a Leatherworker Villager: purchase in exchange for emeralds.

Killing a mob equipped with a saddle: some mobs spawn with a saddle and drop it upon death.

Finding a Saddle in Chests

Exploring world structures is the most reliable way to get a saddle quickly. Several types of structures contain saddles in their chests with different drop rates.

Dungeon: 27.9% chance

Dungeons are small underground rooms with a mob spawner (Zombie, Skeleton, or Spider) and 1 to 2 chests. Each chest has a 27.9% chance of containing a saddle. Dungeons are found in caves between Y=0 and Y=50, and can be identified by the sound of the spawner and cobblestone walls in the middle of natural stone.

Nether Fortress: 35.3% chance

The Nether Fortress is one of the best sources of saddles with a 35.3% chance per chest. These chests are found in the side corridors of the fortress, recognizable by their characteristic Nether brick roof. This is a structure you will visit anyway to farm Blazes, making it a natural opportunity to pick up a saddle.

Village (leatherworker): 16.2% chance

In Villages, the leatherworker's house sometimes contains a chest with a saddle (16.2% chance). The leatherworker can be recognized by their house with a cauldron. The chest is usually in the main room of the workshop.

Other structures: Temple, Bastion, End City

Structure Saddle Chance Notes
Dungeon 27.9% Accessible early, underground
Nether Fortress 35.3% Best rate
Village (leatherworker) 16.2% Easy access
Jungle Temple 12.9% Two chests per temple
Bastion Remnant 13.6% Dangerous, Nether only
Desert Temple 23.5% Trapped central chest
End City Rare Various chests with high-level loot

Getting a Saddle by Fishing or Trading

If you haven't explored any structures yet, two alternatives allow you to get a saddle without leaving your starting area.

Luck of the Sea III enchantment to increase chances

Fishing allows you to obtain saddles as a "treasure" item. Without enchantment, the probability is very low. With a fishing rod enchanted with Luck of the Sea III, the "treasure" category represents about 7.1% of catches, and the saddle is one of the possible items in this category.

This is not the fastest method, but if you fish regularly for other reasons (food, experience, enchanted books), a saddle may appear as a bonus. Combining with the Lure III enchantment increases fishing speed and thus the frequency of catches.

Leatherworker (Master level): price in emeralds

The Leatherworker villager can sell a saddle directly at Master level for 6 emeralds. This is the safest method if you already have an established village and a stock of emeralds. To level up a Leatherworker to Master, you need to trade with them regularly, going through all intermediate levels (Novice, Apprentice, Journeyman, Expert, then Master).

If you don't have a village yet or want to multiply your emerald income sources, our guide to the best Minecraft plugins lists tools that make trade management easier on servers.

Riding a Pig with a Saddle

The pig is the first mount many players try to use, often with disappointing results. However, it remains fun and useful in certain contexts.

How to equip the saddle on a pig

To ride a pig, approach it and right-click with the saddle in hand: it will automatically be placed on its back. You can then mount it with a right-click. Without a carrot on a stick in hand, the pig moves freely without you being able to steer it.

To retrieve the saddle from a living pig, open its inventory interface (press E while riding) and remove the saddle manually. It is not lost as long as the pig stays alive.

Carrot on a Stick: crafting and use

To steer a mounted pig, you need a Carrot on a Stick. The recipe is as follows:

1 Fishing Rod + 1 Carrot = 1 Carrot on a Stick

(Place the fishing rod in the top left and the carrot just below it in the crafting table)

Hold this item in your hand while riding the pig to steer it in the direction you are looking. It will speed up if you right-click, consuming the item's durability.

Why the pig is less interesting than the horse

The pig is slower than an average horse and cannot jump over obstacles. It remains useful for short and fun explorations, but for long journeys, the horse is still the reference land mount. For everything you need to know about taming and horse stats, check out our complete Minecraft horse guide.

Riding a Strider in the Nether

The Strider is the only truly essential mount for a player progressing in the Nether. It allows you to cross lava lakes that would otherwise be impassable.

The only way to cross lava safely

The Strider is a passive Nether mob that naturally walks on lava. Equipped with a saddle, it becomes the only mount capable of crossing oceans of lava without taking damage. This unique ability makes exploring the Nether incomparably safer, especially in Crimson Forest and Warped Forest biomes where lava lakes often separate walkable areas.

Striders spawn in groups in Nether lava. To approach them without falling, build a platform at the edge of the lava or approach from a solidly established shore.

Warped Fungus on a Stick to steer

Just as the pig requires a carrot, the Strider requires a Warped Fungus on a Stick to be steered. The recipe is identical to the carrot version:

1 Fishing Rod + 1 Warped Fungus = 1 Warped Fungus on a Stick

Warped Fungus can be collected in the Warped Forest biome of the Nether (the blue-green biome with giant blue mushrooms). Hold the item in your hand while on the Strider to steer it and accelerate with right-click.

Depth Strider enchantment: does not apply to Strider

A common confusion: the Depth Strider enchantment applies to the player's boots to speed up movement underwater, it has no connection with the Strider mob. The name is misleading but the two are totally unrelated. For everything about this boot enchantment, our guide to the Depth Strider enchantment details its full functionality.

Saddle on Mule and Donkey

The mule and donkey are two often overlooked mounts but extremely useful for transporting resources over long distances.

Mule vs Donkey: which carries more?

The Mule is obtained by breeding a horse and a donkey. The Donkey spawns naturally in plains and savannas. Both can carry a chest in addition to the saddle, making them unique transport mounts in the game.

Criteria Mule Donkey Horse
Can carry a chest Yes Yes No
Maximum speed Fixed (medium) Fixed (slow) Variable (fast)
Can jump Low Low High (variable)
Obtained by Breeding horse + donkey Natural spawn Natural spawn
Requires a saddle Yes Yes Yes

The mule is slightly faster than the donkey but both are slower than most horses. Their main advantage is their ability to carry a chest.

Combining saddle + chest on a mule

To equip a mule or donkey with a chest, first mount it with a saddle, then right-click with a chest in hand while riding or standing next to it. The chest appears on its sides and is accessible via the inventory interface (press E). This chest has 15 inventory slots and cannot be removed without killing the animal (the chest and its contents drop upon death).

Comparison: mule vs horse vs pig vs strider

Mount Speed Steering Main advantage Dimension
Horse Fast Free reins Fast land travel Overworld
Mule / Donkey Slow Free reins Chest transport Overworld
Pig Slow Carrot on a stick Fun, short trip Overworld
Strider Medium Fungus on a stick Crossing lava Nether only

Minecraft Saddle FAQ

Can you recover the saddle from a dead animal?

It depends on the animal. For a horse, mule, or donkey, the saddle is dropped on the ground when the animal dies and can be picked up normally. For a pig, the saddle is lost if the pig dies: it does not drop. This is another reason to favor sturdier mounts for risky adventures. For a Strider, the saddle does drop upon its death.

Does the saddle work on Llamas?

No. Llamas cannot be equipped with a saddle and cannot be directly mounted and steered by the player. They can wear a carpet instead of a saddle for decoration, and a chest for transport. Llamas follow a player holding a Lead and can be guided in a caravan of up to 10 at once. They are therefore useful for transport but not as a traditional mount.

Does the saddle disappear if the mob is killed?

Depending on the mob: the saddle drops upon death of horses, mules, donkeys, Striders, and equipped pigs (except for the pig exception mentioned above). It does not disappear in most cases. However, if the animal dies in lava or falls into the void, the saddle can be destroyed along with the rest of the drops. Be sure to equip your mounts with a saddle only when needed, and remove it before exposing the animal to dangerous areas.
