Silk Touch Minecraft: Obtaining Silk Touch

The Minecraft silk touch enchantment (silk touch minecraft in English, formerly called delicacy enchantment in early French versions) allows you to collect blocks as they are instead of their usual drop. Ore blocks, intact glass, grass, beehives with bees: Silk Touch is one of the most sought-after enchantments in the game. This guide covers all methods to obtain it, the blocks involved, and the comparison with Fortune in 2026.

What is Silk Touch?

Silk Touch is a level I enchantment applicable to four tools: pickaxe, shovel, axe, and hoe. Unlike most enchantments, it only has one level. Its effect is simple: the mined block drops as an intact block instead of transforming into another item. For example, a diamond ore mined with Silk Touch gives the diamond ore block itself, not a raw diamond.

This enchantment is incompatible with Fortune. The two cannot coexist on the same tool in normal gameplay. If commands are used to force both enchantments on the same tool, Silk Touch takes priority on blocks affected by both enchantments.

The enchantment is applied via an anvil (enchanted book + tool) or directly via the enchantment table. It works the same way in Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.

How to Obtain Silk Touch

There are three main methods to obtain the Minecraft silk touch.

Enchantment Table. Surround your enchantment table with 15 bookshelves (placed one block apart, on one or two levels of height) to unlock level 30 enchantments. Silk Touch can appear on any compatible tool, but the chances vary. Tip: enchanting a wooden shovel maximizes the probability of obtaining Silk Touch because this tool has a very reduced pool of possible enchantments (about 16.7% chance). If the proposed enchantment does not suit you, enchant a low-cost item at level 1 to reset the proposals, then check again.

Librarian Villager. This is the most reliable method to obtain a Silk Touch book at will. Place a lectern next to an unemployed villager to turn them into a librarian. Check their trades at Novice level: they offer either an enchanted book or a paper/shelf trade. If the book is not Silk Touch, break the lectern before making any trade, then replace it to reset their offers. Repeat until you get Silk Touch. Once the trade is locked (after a first purchase), the villager offers Silk Touch indefinitely. The cost is generally low (5 to 20 emeralds) since Silk Touch is technically a level I enchantment.

Since version 1.20.2, the trading system has evolved with the "Trade Rebalance" (experimental feature). When this option is enabled, the enchanted books offered depend on the village biome. Librarians from snowy biomes (Snowy Taiga, Snowy Plains) guarantee a Silk Touch I book at Master rank. For more information on professions and trades, check our villager guide.

Chests and Fishing. Enchanted Silk Touch books can appear in dungeon chests, temples, Nether fortresses, bastions, and End cities. Fishing with a Luck of the Sea enchanted rod can also yield enchanted books, including Silk Touch. These methods are random and unreliable for targeting a specific enchantment, but they are a pleasant bonus during exploration.

Which Blocks to Collect with Silk Touch

Block Normal Drop (without Silk Touch) Drop with Silk Touch
Diamond Ore 1 diamond Diamond ore block
Emerald Ore 1 emerald Emerald ore block
Lapis Lazuli Ore 4-9 lapis lazuli Lapis ore block
Redstone Ore 4-5 redstone Redstone ore block
Coal Ore 1 coal Coal ore block
Nether Quartz Ore 1 quartz Quartz ore block
Glass / Stained Glass Nothing (destroyed) Intact glass block
Glass Pane Nothing (destroyed) Intact glass pane
Stone Cobblestone Stone block
Grass Dirt block Grass block
Mycelium Dirt block Mycelium block
Beehive / Bee Nest Empty hive (bees escape) Hive with bees inside
Ice Nothing (melts into water) Ice block
Packed Ice Nothing (disappears) Packed ice block
Glowstone 2-4 glowstone dust Intact glowstone block
Leaves Nothing (chance of apple/sapling) Leaves block
Snow (layer) Snowballs Snow layer
Melon 3-7 slices Whole melon block
Spawner Nothing (destroyed) Nothing (Silk Touch has no effect)

Note: Silk Touch does not work on spawners. Even with the enchantment, breaking a spawner destroys it without yielding anything. This is a deliberate limitation of the game.

The most valuable use cases are retrieving glass (repositioning without loss), beehives with bees (moving a complete apiary), ice (transport for obsidian farms or decoration), and ore blocks (compact storage or decoration, then later mining with Fortune to maximize drops).

Silk Touch vs Fortune

The choice between Silk Touch and Fortune is one of the most strategic decisions in Minecraft. The two enchantments are incompatible, meaning you must dedicate a tool to each.

Fortune III multiplies ore drops: 1 to 4 diamonds per ore (2.2 on average), 1 to 4 emeralds, up to 36 lapis lazuli. For pure resource collection (diamond, emerald, lapis, redstone, coal, quartz), Fortune is objectively superior in terms of yield.

Silk Touch excels in two situations. The first is optimized storage: mining an ore with Silk Touch then storing it allows you to break it later with Fortune, which is useful when you don't yet have Fortune III. The second is retrieving irreplaceable blocks: glass, grass, mycelium, beehives, ice, leaves, intact glowstone.

The optimal survival strategy is to have both: a Silk Touch pickaxe for special blocks and ore storage, and a Fortune III pickaxe for daily mining and maximum extraction. On a multiplayer server, a high-performance Minecraft hosting allows multiple players to mine simultaneously without TPS drops, even with inventories loaded with ore blocks.

FAQ

Does Silk Touch work on dragon eggs?

No. The dragon egg cannot be collected with Silk Touch. You must use the piston or torch block method underneath to turn it into an item.

Can Silk Touch be applied to shears?

No. In normal gameplay, Silk Touch only applies to pickaxes, shovels, axes, and hoes. Shears, swords, and fishing rods are not compatible.

Does Silk Touch work on iron and gold ore?

Yes. Raw iron and gold ore (since 1.17) normally give raw iron or raw gold. With Silk Touch, you collect the intact ore block. You can then smelt it in a furnace (1 ingot per block) or break it later with Fortune for more drops.

Is the old name "Delicacy" still used?

No. The delicacy enchantment was the French name in the game's early translations. It was renamed "Toucher de soie" in later versions. The English name Silk Touch has remained the same since the enchantment's introduction.

How to get Silk Touch the fastest?

The fastest method is the librarian cycle: place a lectern, check the offer, break the lectern if it's not Silk Touch, replace, repeat. On average, it takes 15 to 30 resets to land on Silk Touch, which takes a few minutes.
